13 Vanished Drivers: No Trace, No Clue

It’s a fact of life: people go missing. The National Missing and Unidentified Persons organization tells us that 600,000 do this every year in the U.S. Most turn up fairly quickly, but not everyone. Some are never seen again, leaving friends and relatives in a state of miserable speculation. Some of the most puzzling cases are those that involve an abandoned vehicle, with the owner nowhere to be found. And it’s an unlucky 13 of the most frightening of those unsettling cases that we’re going to delve into here.

1. Jodi Huisentruit — disappeared in 1995

Jodi Huisentruit of Mason, Iowa, was a success. By the age of just 27 she was already working as a news anchor for the local CBS partner station. But on a June day in 1995 she didn’t show up for her stint in front of the cameras.

One of her colleagues called her and Huisentruit said she’d slept in but was on her way to the TV station. Yet a fair amount of time passed, and still she didn’t appear.

A scream

By now Huisentruit’s co-workers were worried enough to call the police. The cops soon found her Mazda Miata, finished in a sporty red, in the parking lot by her apartment. But Huisentruit wasn’t with the car.

Strewn around the vehicle were various of Huisentruit’s personal items, including a pair of shoes and a blow dryer. The police began a serious investigation but drew a blank, although some neighbors said they’d heard a scream around the time that Huisentruit was due to leave for work.

A $30,000 reward

A reward of $30,000 was offered for any information about Huisentruit, but even that failed to generate any solid leads. Her family hired a private detective and details of the disappearance were featured on three TV shows, including America's Most Wanted. None of this activity produced results.

The mystery of Huisentruit’s disappearance remains unsolved, and in 2001 she was officially declared dead. But her family still operates a website, FindJodi.com, in hopes of learning the truth about what happened to the young woman.

2. Jeramy Burt — disappeared 2007

Although divorced from his ex-wife Kim, Jeramy Burt still lived with her in their Boise, Idaho, home along with their child and Burt’s father. On a February evening in 2007 Burt borrowed Kim’s car, planning to meet up with a friend.

Then, unsettling text messages from Burt began to appear on Kim’s cell. The gist of them were that her ex had decided to vanish before embarking on a new life.

The wilds of the Owyhee Desert

Burt now did indeed disappear, along with Kim’s Mercury Cougar. But Burt’s family suspected that he’d not sent those texts, as they were so out of character. Another three months would pass before the family had any concrete information.

But the news was far from comforting. The burnt-out wreck of the car had turned up in the wilds of the Owyhee Desert which straddles south-west Idaho and parts of Nevada and Oregon.

A murky tale

Then a murky tale emerged. Burt had been having an affair with his lawyer, Jeannie Braun, the very woman who’d negotiated his divorce. Burt had found out she’d been involved in criminal activity and testified about this before a Grand Jury.

Braun ended up serving jail time. But despite this previously unsuspected side of Burt’s life being exposed, absolutely no link between his fate and Braun has ever been established. The disappearance remains unsolved.

3. Paige Renkoski — disappeared 1990

Paige Renkoski of Okemos, Michigan, was 30 years old in May 1990 when she drove off in her mother’s Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais. She had been doing her mom a favor, taking her to catch a flight at Detroit Metropolitan.

After dropping off her mother, Renkoski visited a friend then headed back to Okemos. Later, witnesses were to recall they’d seen Renkoski on Interstate 96, stopped at the side of the highway.

Door open, lights on, engine idling

She’d been talking to two unknown males. Some said the conversation seemed fraught and even that one man had grasped her arm. Some hours later the vehicle was reported as unattended.

But when police arrived at the location, Renkoski was nowhere to be seen. The Oldsmobile’s door was hanging open, the lights were on, and the engine was running. Renkoski’s shoes, wallet and purse were all inside the car.

A suspect

At first, questions about the identities of the men seen with Renkoski and why they were interacting with her remained unanswered. But eventually in 2001 police had a suspect in their sights. He was actually in a Michigan jail serving a sentence for carjacking.

The driver had been a woman and this had happened not long after Renkoski disappeared. Police dropped him from their investigations after he passed a lie-detector test; Renkoski’s disappearance remains a chilling mystery to this day.

4. Phoenix Coldon

A week before Christmas 2011 was the last time that Phoenix Coldon’s parents saw their daughter, who had been 23 at the time. That afternoon, she’d driven away from their home in Spanish Lake, Missouri, in her Chevrolet Blazer.

Some three hours later, Coldon’s abandoned car was found and impounded just a 25-minute drive from her parent’s house. The engine was still running and the driver’s-side door lay open when the car was discovered.

Thousands of dollars

Coldon herself was nowhere to be seen, and the police who towed the car had no idea that the driver had disappeared. Weeks would pass before Coldon’s parents learned that her car had been impounded.

Feeling that the police had let them down, the Coldons went on to spend thousands of dollars in an effort to trace their missing daughter. But their efforts produced no results.

“I just want to be happy”

In 2018 true-crime TV show Oxygen broadcast a documentary titled “The Disappearance of Phoenix Coldon.” It included footage from a Snapchat video Coldon had made not long before she disappeared.

In the video Coldon said, “I just want to be happy, man. I can't remember a time when I was happy.” Does that indicate that she’d voluntarily run away? Or is there a more sinister explanation? To date we simply don’t know what happened to her.

5. Brandon Swanson — disappeared 2008

One evening in May 2008 19-year-old Brandon Swanson celebrated the end of his spring semester at Minnesota West Community and Technical College with some friends. Unfortunately, as he later drove home he managed to steer his Chevy Lumina into a ditch in Lynd, Minnesota.

So he did exactly what many teenagers might do in a tight spot: he phoned home. His parents, Brian and Annette jumped into their pick-up truck to rescue their son, who was thankfully unhurt.

On foot

The Swansons drove to the spot their son had described — it was only about a ten-minute drive from their home.  During the drive to Lynd they stayed on the phone with their boy. But when they reached the location neither Swanson nor his car were to be seen.

Still talking on the phone, both flicked their lights on and off, yet they still couldn’t find each other. Finally, after more than 40 minutes, Swanson said he would go to a friend’s nearby house on foot.

The line went dead

After taking Annette home, Brian headed out again to try and track down his son, again talking to him on his phone. But suddenly Swanson shouted a curse and the line went dead: that was the last anyone heard from him.

Eventually police found Swanson’s car 25 miles away from Lynd. The cops thought he might have fallen into the Yellow Medicine River. But despite extensive searches, Swanson wasn’t found and his whereabouts remain unknown.

6. Sherri Holland — disappeared 1996

In the summer of 1996 Sherri Holland had been staying at her vacation home in Flagler Beach, Florida. The time came for the 34-year-old and her two dogs to return to her permanent residence in Atlanta, Georgia.

But Holland never reached her Atlanta home. Concerned, her sisters made a missing person report, and nine days later Holland’s empty BMW was found near Morrow, Georgia, on Interstate 75.

One dog found

The only apparent problem with Holland’s car was a flat front tire, punctured by a nail. Sherri was nowhere to be seen, but one of her dogs was found a couple of miles away.

Sadly the other dog had been run over on the road. Various people claimed to have seen Holland around the area where her car had been found. But none of those sightings helped to find her.

Blackmail?

One spine-chilling theory arose from Holland’s thriving escort service business. A colleague claimed that she may have been secretly filming and blackmailing clients, creating a possible motive for her murder.

Some said that Holland had become disillusioned with escort work and had talked of heading to Europe for a new life. Whatever the truth of any of those claims, only one thing is certain: Holland has never been seen again.

7. Bryce Laspisa — disappeared 2013

In August 2013 Bryce Laspisa called up his parents Mike and Karen at their home in Laguna Niguel, California. The call was placed in the early hours of the morning.

Their 19-year-old son had been driving the 460 miles to his parents’ home from Sierra College in Rocklin, California where he was studying. He called to tell his folks that he was too tired to complete the journey and was going to stop and sleep in his car.

In a ravine

The last time anyone laid eyes on Laspisa was in the Californian town of Castaic, about 100 miles from his Laguna Niguel destination. Just a few hours after that fateful call, events took a dark turn.

Yes, Laspisa’s Toyota Highlander had been spotted not far from Castaic Lake. Ominously, the vehicle was lying on its side in a ravine. The rear window was shattered and there was no sign of Laspisa.

Nowhere to be found

Although Laspisa wasn’t with his car, inside it were his laptop, cell phone and wallet. A comprehensive search of the area drew a blank: he was nowhere to be found.

It seems that he’d been using drugs and drinking too much before he disappeared, but whether those were pertinent factors remains undetermined. The Laspisas still haven’t given up on their son and continue to run a Facebook page titled “Find Bryce Laspisa”.

8. Leah Roberts — disappeared in 2000

Leah Roberts dropped out of college in 2000. Apparently inspired by the writings of Jack Kerouac, author of the freewheeling 1957 book On The Road, she decided to go traveling.

Roberts was a young woman who had already experienced more than her fair share of grief: both the 22-year-old's parents had died during her teens. Appearing on Larry King Live her big sister Kara said that, “I feel like she took this… as a soul-searching trip”.

A kitten called Bea

Leah set off from Durham, North Carolina in March 2000, driving northwest in her Jeep Cherokee, her only companion a kitten called Bea. She didn’t tell anyone exactly where she was headed. Tragedy didn’t take long to strike.

Just nine days after she’d started out, her wrecked vehicle was discovered off the Mount Baker Highway about 85 miles from Seattle, Washington. Of Leah, there was no sign. The kitten was gone too.

Eerie enigma

Some of her personal effects were strewn around the Jeep including a guitar, CDs, and $2,500 folded into a pair of pants. One witness claimed to have seen Roberts at a gas station in a confused state.

But that was hardly enough information to track her down. There were suspicions that foul play may have been involved in her disturbance. But nothing conclusive has ever been found to solve this eerie enigma.

9. Gregory Keith Mann Jr. — disappeared 1997

In 1997 Gregory Keith Mann Jr. was 20 years old and working at a Ford dealership in Wichita Falls, Texas. The dealership was in the habit of giving salesmen the use of a car at weekends.

So, one Friday evening in May that year, Mann drove off in a red Ford Mustang. He headed for his apartment, then went out to spend some time with a couple of his buddies. They went for a McDonald’s

Nowhere to be seen

Mann told his friends he had to leave them for a meeting he’d arranged , due to take place just after midnight. The last his friends saw of him, he was entering his apartment about 15 minutes before midnight.

In fact, that was the last anyone would ever see of Mann. The next morning Mann’s parents discovered the Ford Mustang he’d borrowed in a parking lot near their home; their son was nowhere to be seen.

The mysterious meeting

Mann belongings were undisturbed in his apartment where he had not apparently spent the night. He’d used his fiancée’s credit card to buy petrol the evening before, but no more payments were ever made with the card.

The whole affair was thoroughly mystifying. Did the midnight meeting that Mann mentioned to his friends have a connection with his disappearance? Nobody even knows whom he was due to meet. His disappearance remains unexplained.

10.  Melissa Ann Trumpy — disappeared 2021

It was in the fall of 2021 that Melissa Ann Trumpy went missing. The last time anyone saw her was on an October night in Monroe, Wisconsin. She’d left that location in her truck, heading for a rendezvous with her boyfriend Derek Hammer in Shannon, Illinois.

But her abandoned truck was found on a country road in Stephenson County, Illinois, with various belongings  — which included her cell phone — still inside it. Extensive searches failed to find Trumpy.

Last person to see her alive?

What had happened to the 37-year-old mother-of-three? Some of her friends and family members had strong suspicions that her boyfriend Hammer had played a part in the disappearance. In fact, he was arrested the day after his girlfriend disappeared.

But the arrest wasn’t connected with her disappearance. It was for drugs offenses, crimes of which Trumpy was also accused. If Trumpy had indeed made it to Shannon, then Hammer might have been the last person to see her alive.

A homicide case

Hammer has never been charged in connection with Trumpy’s disappearance. But his past behavior is hardly reassuring. In October 2023 WKOW 27 News reported that, “Just more than a month before Trumpy was last seen, Hammer was charged with domestic abuse.”

The outlet’s report continued, “His arrest came after Trumpy’s son told his teacher he saw Hammer hit Trumpy and pull a gun on her.” Of course that proves nothing, but Trumpy’s disappearance is being treated by police as a homicide case.

11. Maura Murray — disappeared 2004

In February 2004 Maura Murray was driving along Route 112 near Haverhill, New Hampshire, when she lost control of her black Saturn on a bend and crashed into a tree.

It seems Murray was somewhat accident-prone; just a few days earlier she’d crashed her father’s car. This time a witness to the accident called the police. That was despite the fact that Murray had asked him not to.

No footprints

When the cops arrived on the scene, they found the car too damaged to drive — but no sign of Murray. Also missing were her bank cards and phone, although various other personal possessions were still in the vehicle.

Strangely, although there was snow lying where the car had come to a halt, no footprints were visible in the vicinity. Plus dogs searching for her scent could trace nothing outside of a 100-yard radius.

Under the influence?

The witness to the crash said that Murray was unharmed but might have been under the influence of something. Police formed the opinion that someone must have given Murray a ride.

But who that might have been and where they’d gone remained as unanswered questions. To this day we still don’t know where Murray is, or even if she is still alive. The mystery is deepened by the fact that there’s no known history of emotional or family problems.

12. Jim Sullivan — disappeared 1975

Musician Jim Sullivan was 34 when he set off in his Volkswagen Beetle —or ”Bug” — in 1975 from Los Angeles. He was heading for Nashville, Tennessee in hopes of finding musical fame and fortune there.

Sullivan had already driven more than 900 miles west when police stopped him. They’d seen him driving erratically but it turned out that he was tired, rather than drunk or stoned. Even so, the cops told Sullivan to stop off for the day.

Abandoned Volkswagen

At the cops’ suggestion, Sullivan checked into La Mesa Motel in nearby Santa Rosa, New Mexico. A couple of days later, the Volkswagen was discovered with no sign of Sullivan.

The car was locked and Sullivan’s personal effects including his wallet and  his guitar were inside. So what had made him leave his car and his possessions just 26 miles away from the motel? A search seemed to show that although he’d checked in, he hadn’t slept there.

Abducted by aliens?

Sullivan’s car was found near a ranch owned by the Gennettis, a family rumored to have Mob connections. Was this relevant? It was never proven to be so. But even more outlandish was the theory that Sullivan had been abducted by aliens.

He’d released an album called U.F.O. which became a cult hit after his disappearance. That title was enough to convince many believers in extra-terrestrial beings that Sullivan had in fact been abducted by aliens.

3. Kristi Krebs — disappeared 1993

In the summer of 1993 Kristi Krebs had been working at a restaurant in Fort Bragg, California. One evening the 22-year-old finished her shift at Round Table Pizza and got into her red Toyota Tercel.

Her intention, at least as far as anyone knew, had been to drive home where she lived with her family. But she never made it home: the next day her car was found abandoned, stuck in a muddy creek in MacKerricher State Park.

Ominous signs

The car radio was missing but present were Kreb’s work clothes, underwear, driver’s license and wallet. But of Kreb herself there was absolutely no sign. Ominously there were torn I.D. papers and photos nearby.

Perhaps even more worryingly, as well as the above traces of blood were found nearby. And strangely,  Krebs had been involved in a similarly bizarre incident three years earlier, when her car had got stuck in mud and caught fire.

Mental crisis

On that previous occasion, Krebs had been found the next morning meandering along a railroad track in a confused state. She’d seemingly experienced some kind of mental crisis and spent some months in hospital.

But that didn’t fully explain her complete disappearance on this second occasion. In the following months there were reports that Krebs had been seen hitchhiking in Utah, but she has never been found.
